Aircraft Engravers permanently marks data plates using the vibro-peening method.
The Aircraft Engravers’ data plates are made from aircraft grade .020" Stainless Steel that meets all FAA specifications. The text for most other data plates are either engraved (also done by Aircraft Engravers on special order) or stamped, however, we vibro-peen the text into the data plates. Vibro-peening is a process that uses a pneumatic tool with a reciprocating point that impacts the data tag at approximately 5,000 strokes per minute which leaves an impression where it travels. This process not only gives a very nice look but has many benefits over engraving and stamping such as:
- No scratches, mars or nicks from the engraving machine using a nose cone.
- No burrs or raised edges around the text.
- No distortion or bowing of the data plate from using a steel stamp machine.
- No uneven, out of alignment or rotated letters from hand stamping.
- A uniform, crisp and cleanly marked data plate as seen in the images below.
- There is one negative aspect to vibro-peening, the marking is not as bold or deep as the other methods and can be harder to read when viewing at certain angles.

We can manufacture your Data Plate to your specifications. NOTE: There is a lot of work to get one plate made. The art work has to be drawn, proofed by customer, changes made, silk screen made, silk screen the material, cut out piece, stamp holes, apply plastic protective film, ship. Add up all those steps and it gets pricey fast.
